A review

I have just finished reading The Golden Compass, which has gotten tons of press over the last few months, both because of the movie that came out last year and the outrage of church groups against its message.
I am sorry that it's gotten a lot of press -- press that has encouraged people to read the books, if only for curiosity's sake. I am not impressed at all with Pullman's writing, though I am not sure whether that has to do with the quality of his writing (I found it choppy) or the fact that sci-fi/fantasy has never been high on my list of priority reads. Will I read the other two books in the trilogy? Yes -- I have this uncanny determination to finish something once I start it.
What I do have to say is this: the church in some places may be as Pullman portrays it, but God is not. He is not afraid of knowledge and things that are new to us, because He created it all. He is exceedingly good and caring, and instead of experimenting with us, He tends to us and cares for our every need. And He is not above using Truth in any form to show people who He is. Or who He is not.
